I've done a tutorial where you learned a little bit about tables in a post (Mixed Content Side by Side or Tables). But, now, let's talk about coding for your free text or blurb on your sidebar. See it is very different and works a little like your profile. Here is the dilemma we are presented with this image on the right. What I don't want my sidebar to do:

  1. There is a gap at the top of my sidebar

  2. Looks like there more than one line of a gap between my text and my textbox.

  3. All my book images are on a different line

  4. There is a HUGE gap between my book images and my table.

How do we fix this? First, when you see extra spacing on the sidebar, always check the blurb text coding first because sometimes it is just the coding in that section.

Okay this is very different! We should riot? No. Gosh, I know some people want to which I suspect is why [livejournal.com profile] news no longer let's you comment to their posts which is kind of awful but at the same time probably saves their sanity. Still I get the first reactions towards annoyance and downright hatred of this new bar. Believe me. I get how annoying it can be when LJ changes something and our journal's are all messed up and we have no idea what to do to fix it and we are totally frustrated....

Okay so LJ has instituted a new feature, I like it and I hope you will as well. It is called Recent Posts or Recent Entries. So the question is how to I get something recent posts below my journal entry.

First, you have to be using one of the themes that it is enabled on. When LJ first introduced this feature it was only available with Minimalism, Expressive, Air, Chameleon but it suddently showed up on Flexible Squares a few days ago and I'm guessing they are slowly but surely adding it to other layouts. So far no word on whether or not it will be available for communities (though I'm hoping).

You may have recently noticed that LiveJournal has made the "Recent Posts From This Journal" available for Flexible Squares. This is what it looks like over at my journal.

The issue I discovered when it first went live was that it doesn't match my journal layout! What to do...

The solution is we have to learn to code for it. And that is what I will endevor to accomplish in this tutorial.

If you've been updating your coding and saving it as we go, your footer may be looking something like this:
This is not what we want to see and as you would notice, there doesn't appear to be a previous link. Not good at all. We want something link one of these:
1.
2.

As promised with the Body tutorial, let's go over changing fonts. I've already done a tutorial about how to use Google Fonts. I recommend going over that before continuing on.

So it is possible your Header Navbar looks like this:

But we want it to look like this:

Here is how we make that happen.... )

So this is all a matter of opinion. Some of you hate the Friends Feed and some of you prefer it. You might even be like me and are indifferent to it. It has it's uses but you like seeing your journal when you are going through friend posts.

But if you were like me and you kept your friends page (never switching or never being switched), you might want the Friends Feed to be what you see when you click the FRIENDS link on your journal's navbar (this is unlike me). There is a solution which is likely to work (I'd like anyone trying it to tell me if it works as I didn't click on it to test it).
Get the NEW Friends Feed instead of the Friends Page.... )

Looks like LJ is starting to listen to us and I have to wonder if it has to do with new management. They our asking our opinion and how does the old saying go "You catch more flies with honey than with vinegar." In other words, go to the post link below and tell them how they can make LJ your favorite place on the internet and be polite. Seriously, people love to hear you sympathize with them and you think they are doing a good job even if there is something you don't like.

Some of the suggestions I made to LJ are on this list, though I bet I'm not the only one who made them. I work in customer service and I work with website feedback all the time. Do you realize the negative put downs are opened, barely read and then deleted? The moment you rant at them, the moment you start putting them down; they won't listen.

So my suggestions is to be polite, helpful, give examples of issues, tell them why you think something is just going to improve LJ. They want to know these things, not that you hate them for changing stuff. Help them improve. Let's teach them what we really want.

We wanted to post here to let you know that we've been reading your feedback, to show you what the most common feedback we have received is, and to give you an opportunity to let us know what else we may have missed. So far, what we know is:

1) You don't like how everything just suddenly changed with no warning or initial announcement.

2) The colors are too light. Especially with regards to comment pages (both header colors and the grey text color), text entered into the Update page, the entry page text, and links/lj tags which you have visited look too similar to those you haven't.
