Easy Fixes You Might Not Know About

No worries. We'll find the answer.
So not everyone is a LiveJournal expert (I swear I'm not either). And, of course, there are those out there that are learning this all for the first time. So here are a few things that have come up that I hope will help beginners and people who just hadn't figured it out yet. And yes, this is the second such post. The first just had a ton of comments and I wanted to clean things up.

I've done a tutorial where you learned a little bit about tables in a post (Mixed Content Side by Side or Tables). But, now, let's talk about coding for your free text or blurb on your sidebar. See it is very different and works a little like your profile. Here is the dilemma we are presented with this image on the right. What I don't want my sidebar to do:

  1. There is a gap at the top of my sidebar

  2. Looks like there more than one line of a gap between my text and my textbox.

  3. All my book images are on a different line

  4. There is a HUGE gap between my book images and my table.

How do we fix this? First, when you see extra spacing on the sidebar, always check the blurb text coding first because sometimes it is just the coding in that section.

Now that we've picked how wide our content is, how wide the sidebar and the posts are, what our header image & header navbar look like; it is time to make that sidebar look like something!

Hopefully you all understand the body section of the coding. I wanted to mention as we get into these explanations that occasionally you'll find coding sections that are not part of these tutorials. Feel free to point me to them and I will explain them. I've come across some as well but right now I can't really think of an example.

Now, we want to look at the basic structures of the layout. The different types of content (content, maincontent & subcontent) and the sidebar. I won't be going into detail about the sidebar yet. That will come later. This is just understanding the main coding for these elements.

Actions: Random Numbers on Sidebar

I don't know what LJ is doing but they are making all sorts of issues. As you can see there are numbers popping up on this sidebar. I've never encountered this before but suddenly there they are.

What they are is essentially numbering for a list. It is a long explaination but your links and tags are essentially a bulleted list that has been customized with coding by LJ and layout makers. Now numbers are showing up.

In your coding you might see something like this:

Actions: Removing the Sidebar from your journal and changing a layout coding to make it a no sidebar layout
Theme: Flexible Squares (not sure if it works with other themes)

Directions:
1. Go to Select Journal Style.

2. Make sure you are using the right theme. We will work in Flexible Squares. So make sure your Current Theme is a Flexible Squares Theme. (I generally make all my layouts in the Autumn Layout.)
3. See the link under Customize your theme? Click Change page setup.

4. Choose the no sidebar option.

The idea is to make your journal's sidebar have image links rather than the navbar links at the top or just for an added look to your journal. So I'm going to attempt to explain it to you.

1. First, you'll need the images. This image here of a sidebar shows me that this blogger made her images or had them made. I'm going to use some off the net.

2. When you have your images you'll need to upload them to a Image Location like PhotoBucket. You are going to need the Direct Link that PhotoBucket provides. If you wish to save the images in your Scrapbook you'll need to check out this tutorial.

3. Go to Customize Journal Style>Sidebar. You will be working in the Blurb or Free Text Box.
Make sure your second line as shown says that you want to show the blurb/free text box on your sidebar. You do not have to enter a title if you are trying to make a link system.
