No worries. We'll find the answer.
So not everyone is a LiveJournal expert (I swear I'm not either). And, of course, there are those out there that are learning this all for the first time. So here are a few things that have come up that I hope will help beginners and people who just hadn't figured it out yet.My Journal
- How can I change the amount of Journal entries on my journal or friends page?
- How do I change my Tiny Icons?
- There is a strange block of color behind my layout. What is going on?
- Why can't I get the Title and Subtitle to show up on my journal?
- Is it possible to remove the Page Title from the Journal Title when I'm in my posts?
- How do I change the names of the links on my navbar?
- My header image is multiplying itself. How do I stop it?
- There is a large gap under my header image. How do I remove it?
- Why isn't my userpic moving from Left to Right (or visa versa)?
- How do I post a future post without it being added to my Scheduled Entries?
- How do I remane the comment links at the bottom of my entry?
- Why doesn't my subject text look the same as your Layout image. How do I get the font?
- I don't want my to see my layout when I click into posts or comments. How do I make my posts theme-less?
- Why aren't the currents music and location coming up in my journal posts?
- I don't want my comments page to be customized. / I want to use the customizations my layout offers for my comments pages.
- My userpics are fine but my comments aren't showing the threads. They are all the same width and are not indenting under each other.
- How do I change the title of my sidebar sections?
- How do I add a calendar to my sidebar?
- I have the Calendar set to shwo up on my sidebar but it isn't working with your layout?
- I have made multiple tags and want to change them. How do I edit my tags?
- How do I add linked images to my sidebar?
- I noticed you have two links sections. How did you do that?
- How do I get rid of the sidebar all together and just have my entries?
- I have my default userpic on my sidebar but how do I center and customize it?
The Answers
My Journal
My Journal
- How can I change the amount of Journal Entries on my journal or friends page? Check out the Customize Your
Theme>Display section. There you will be able to change the number of journal entries on both your page and your friend page in the Basic Options section - How do I change my Tiny Icons? Check out my Tiny Icons Tutorial.
- There is a strange block of color behind my layout. What is going on? Are you using a Plus Account? Because chances are you are seeing some kind of advertisement block that is hindering a perfect view of your journal. My only recommendations can be that you down grade to a free account, upgrade to a paid account or move the advertisements to vertical so they are in your sidebar. You can find a tutorial about the LJ Advertisements here.example: click for larger image
- Why can't I get the Title and Subtitle to show up on my journal? Well if you are using one of my layouts the reason is that I don't use them so I tend to enter the coding .title, .subtitle { display: none;}. If you want the .title and .subtitle you need to remove the display: none; and possibly separate the two into their own sections (example: .title { } and .subtitle { }). I ususally give them a position of relative and then use margins to get them into the exact location I want them. You may also need to give them a z-index: 199; to make sure they show up on top of all other elements.
- Is it possible to remove the Page Title from the Journal Title when I'm in my posts? So far there is no way to remove this from the Flexible Squares layout. I have not tried on other layouts. If a coding fix for this becomes available I will definitely post about it.
Header Section
- How do I change the names of the links on my navbar (also current text, skiplinks, and back and forward buttons)? [i.e. Recent, Profile, Archive, Friends, Back, Forward.] Really easy change. Go to Customize Your Theme>Text and you will not only see a the titles of your Header Links but the text before your current mood, music and location, the next for your comments, your back and forward buttons and all the text above your entry (skiplinks) such as Memorize, Track, Tag and Edit.
- My header image is multiplying itself. How do I stop it? This tends to be an issue for Scrapbook users. The issue is that the header image is set in the layout to be the width and height of the image I shared with you. So if the Scrapbook feature resizes the image, it leaves you seen double. In the Scrapbook, select your image and choose the "Original" link. This will show you the original image and in your address bar will be the URL for the image. Use this url instead of the one Scrapbook supplied you with. Image Tutorial
- There is a large gap under my header image. How do I remove it? My header image coding is at the very bottom of my coding so go to the end of the coding and above the url there is width and height. The reason you are seeing a gap (or double) is because your image height is smaller than the height indicated in the coding. Match them up and things should work just fine. Image Tutorial
Entries
- Why isn't my userpic moving from Left to Right (or visa versa)? Sometimes when messing with the userpics we don't realize that there is an option we need to change in the Customize Your Theme>Display section. Under Additional Options choose the position of your user picture.
- How do I post a future post without it being added to my Scheduled Entries? Click Scheduled Entries to find all future posts. What I would suggest is that you post this entry for today and then go into your post and change the date after the fact. This circumvents the Scheduled Entries feature.
- How do I rename the comment links at the bottom of my entry? Really easy change. Go to Customize Your Theme>Text and you will not only see a the titles of your Comment Links but the text before your current mood, music and location, your back and forward buttons (footer section) and all the text above your entry (skiplinks) such as Memorize, Track, Tag and Edit. The Link text to leave a comment can just be a word such as comment which I use here. But the Link text to read comments should be laid out like this 1//# or 1 comment//#comments. I used the first option here so just a number appears. You can name yours anything such as Sing as your comment link and then 1 song//#songs. That was if you have 40 comments it will say 40 songs.
- Why doesn't my subject text look the same as your Layout image. How do I get the font? I feel as though fonts really bring something to the layout, like icing on the cake. So when I create a layout I often list the special fonts I've used. Check my layout post for those fonts and then go to the Fonts I Like To Use post to download them and find a tutorial on how to upload them into your computers system. Refresh your page and you should see the font.
- I don't want my to see my layout when I click into posts or comments. How do I make my posts theme-less? (This is the same as Comments Page #1) Check out the Customize Your Theme>Display section. Under the Basic Options there is a "Disable customized comment pages for your journal. Choose No if you want the generic LiveJournal comments page or Yes to use the customizations in your layout coding. There is a tutorial HERE for this change.
- Why aren't the currents music and location coming up in my journal posts? Simply answer is that I forgot I turned them off. See I don't use them so I add this little line of coding... .currentlocation, .currentmusic { display:none; }. Find this line of coding (it will be in the Currents Section) and simply delete it.
Comments Page
- 1. I don't want my comments page to be customized. / I want to use the customizations my layout offers for my comments pages. Check out the Customize Your Theme>Display section. Under the Basic Options there is a "Disable customized comment pages for your journal. Choose No if you want the generic LiveJournal comments page or Yes to use the customizations in your layout coding.
- My userpics are fine but my comments aren't showing the threads. They are all the same width and are not indenting under each other. Entries #1 applies here. Try changing the user picture position to reflect the changes you want.
Sidebar
- How do I change the title of my sidebar sections? Go to the Customize Your Theme>Sidebar Section. Not only can you turn different components on and off but you can change their title or remove it all together.
- How do I add a calendar to my sidebar? Sidebar #1 applies here for adding and removing all components to your sidebar.
- I have the Calendar set to show up on my sidebar but it isn't working with your layout? Oops. I forgot all about turning off this ability. In the sidebar section of my coding you'll find #sidebar_summary, #sidebar_calendar, h2 { display:none!important; }. Delete this line and the calendar should show up in your sidebar.
- I have made multiple tags and want to change them. How do I edit my tags? You can edit tags or rename tags in the Manage Tags feature. You; however, can not move tagged entries to another tag. That you have to do manually in each entry.
- How do I add linked images to my sidebar? You are going to want to do this work in the Customize Your Theme>Sidebar Section. I have a tutorial waiting for you here.
- I noticed you have two link sections. How did you do that? Go to Customize Your Theme>Links List. Here you can put in titles of links and link addresses. If your create a title without putting in a link you get another link list section. The first link list title can be edited in the Sidebar Section of the Customize your Theme.
- How do I get ride of the sidebar all together and just have my entries? We can do this. Please check out the No Sidebar Tutorial which is for using a layout coding which is already set up for this. Or there is the Sidebar/No Sidebar Tutorial for changing layouts with sidebars into no sidebar layouts.
- I have my default userpic on my sidebar but how do I center and customize it? Chances are, if you are using one of my layouts, that it is missing coding for the default userpic or just hasn't been customized. I don't usually have my userpic on my sidebar so it is something I tend to forget. The coding for this is .defaultuserpic { text-align: center; padding: 10px; margin: 0 0 8px 0; } and I would add this to the Sidebar section of your coding. This coding gives the userpic some padding and centers it. You can add additional coding such as a border though because of the padding the border might not be flush with the icon. To remedy that I would suggest removing the padding and using the margin for spacing.
Friends Page
- I'm seeing a gap above my header image (between it at the account banner) on my Friends Page but not on my Journal's homepage. How can I get rid of the gap? This was something I couldn't quite figure out until I stumbled on a post about Friends Page indentations at
s2flexisquares. There is a coding solution but it can come with problems attached... See MIND THE FRIENDS GAP tutorial.
If the above doesn't help you, please...
- Supply example of your problem. If it is in a community please give me a link.
- Sometimes it can take me a little while to find the information asked for, so please be patient.
- I'm not currently taking requests but I'm more than willing to help you figure out problems with coding.
- Do NOT message me with a request for assistance. Please comment to a layout you are having trouble with or below. Replying to messaging with coding and other explainations is harder and prevents others from finding the solutions to the same problems.

Date: 2012-11-29 09:40 am (UTC)Really envy your proficiency with Livejournal. Im still a total noob aft all tis time!
So i came across a livejournal blog:

Those links with the nice pretty pictures on the leftmost column, may I know how do i go about achieving that?
Is there a tutorial related to that?
Thanks so much for ur time!!!
Re: Pictures on the sidebar / links list
Date: 2012-11-29 09:57 pm (UTC)Basically all this blogger did was to create or find image for her links and put them in the free text/blurb space and link them to different areas of the web or their journal.
Let me know if you still need help with this or if you need me to make a tutorial about it. I'd be happy too. And I can honestly say that there was a time I would have been stumped by that journal and wondering how they'd gone about it.

Date: 2013-06-20 05:48 pm (UTC)I have a question, I'm using a Minimalism journal style as a base, how do I do if I want to put this box in my profile, too? If I can do it, of course! http://tinypic.com/view.php?pic=1z2givp&s=7 this is the box I'm talking about, but it uses a flexible square base, I'd like to know if I can do the same thing with a Minimalism layout.
Thank you a lot!! ^^

Date: 2013-09-27 02:55 am (UTC)And two questions:
1) I've seen a couple of people ask this in other comms but never seen an answer: when I click through to a single-entry view, the title displays both the journal title AND the subject of the entry, in the same line instead of just the journal title. (e.g. "Nenya Kanadka - Orphan Black: holy shit" when I just want it to say "Nenya Kanadka" like the Recent Entries view does.) On Dreamwidth, I can do this by saying .pagetitle { display: none; } in the CSS, but I can't make that work on LJ. Do you know an equivalent code?
2) My comments aren't indenting, despite going to the Customize Journal > Display page and setting the icon position to Left. I'm using this layout, and while I've changed some of the coding for the header etc, I haven't touched comments. Any idea what might be wrong?
Both issues currently showing up on this entry: http://nenya-kanadka.livejournal.com/107779.html

Date: 2013-09-27 06:42 pm (UTC)2. Let me look into this.. I feel like there is something obvious in the coding I'm just missing. I may have to consult with another coder.
I'll let you know what I find out.

Date: 2014-11-01 05:35 pm (UTC)I have a weird problem with the layout at my community (http://divine-squids.livejournal.com/). A few weeks ago a black background started to appear over comment links, entry titles (over a part of a title) and userheads. At first I thought it's LiveJournal making some changes again, but I've just found out that the black background doesn't appear when I use Windows Internet Explorer instead of Firefox, which is my main browser.
I'm not sure if this is the right place to ask advice since it seems to be a browser issue rather than LJ one, but perhaps you would have some idea what could help in this situation?
(no subject)
Date: 2014-11-04 12:16 am (UTC)In parts of your coding you have a image as a background and because that image appears to be gone.
What To Do:
Go to your coding in LJ's Customize Section
Find the below coding sections
.subject
.comments
Remove the lines:
background-image
background-repeat
Once you save it this should fix the problem though it is possible there are more removed images. You'll have to look around the community to see if you've removed everything.
The blank behind the userhead images is the same issue.
Find this bit of coding
.ljuser img {
width: 0;
height: 0;
background-repeat: no-repeat;
background-color:transparent;
/* so that IE users will still see an image */
background-image: url(http://img217.imageshack.us/img217/9762/user2dx6.gif);
padding: 9px 8px 0 2px;
}
.ljuser img[src="http://stat.livejournal.com/img/userinfo.gif"] {
background-color:transparent;
background-image: url(http://img217.imageshack.us/img217/9762/user2dx6.gif);
padding: 9px 8px 0 2px;
}
.ljuser img[src="http://stat.livejournal.com/img/community.gif"] {
background-color:transparent;
background-image: url(http://img159.imageshack.us/img159/2002/community1xe1.gif);
padding: 8px 6px 0 2px;
}
The "background-image" coding is also a removed image. Just remove the imageshack link and see if that helps. If not just remove this coding altogether.

Date: 2014-11-17 12:21 am (UTC)Just wanted to say, first of all, your layouts are beautiful, and all your tutorials are really wonderful and helpful. I was wondering if you could help me with the coding for my community's layout (http://kpopkonfections.livejournal.com/)? I'm actually using one of yours, "89. Layout Lounge 1.0". I really love it, but I'm trying to figure out if it's possible to put my title and subtitle where the header is, instead of a header image?
I'm so glad you're still active on livejournal and willing to help everyone out! :D Thank you!
(no subject)
Date: 2014-11-17 11:30 pm (UTC)Replace it with:
.title {
position: absolute;
width: 100%;
height: 150px;
margin-top: -125px;
padding: 0px;
text-align: center;
}
.subtitle{
position: absolute;
width: 100%;
height: 150px;
margin-top: -100px;
padding: 0px;
text-align: center;
}
You can then add font families and sizes and colors to these individually.
They need to be separate so they show up as they should. The margin-top line is what is going to move their location.

Date: 2015-11-02 12:49 pm (UTC)I have had a migraine for the past 24 hours because I can't get my layout back! I was using NOVEL CONUNDRUM for my theme—kinwad.livejournal.com (I love the simplicity), tweaked it with my very limited knowledge of CSS, and finally got it the way I wanted it.
Yesterday, I was on the customization page and scrolling thru the various other themes. I must have hovered over one too long because I got the dreaded message, "Your layout has been changed." I swear on all that's holy I did not click on 'apply theme'! When I stopped hyperventilating, I tried to get Novel Condundrum back and IT WASN'T THERE!!!! So now I have this fugly layout that I hate!
I have another LJ - kinfic2.livejournal.com (probably NSFW, btw) that has NOVEL CONUNDRUM and I also have the style sheet on my computer. I tried unchecking the "Use layout's Base Weblog stylesheet and entering the whole CSS for Novel Conundrum but nothing happened.
*sighs* I sent a support request but I don't know if they'll even see it. *sighs again* You probably won't be able to help, but if there's anything that can help me get my layout back and stop my headache, would be very much appreciated!
Re: DESPERATE FOR LAYOUT HELP

Let me do a little tinkering around and see what I can do.
Were you using the same background image as http://kinfic2.livejournal.com/?
Did you have a specific header image you wanted? Feel free to comment with the links.

Add the below coding. I have made the links red but you can choose black (#000000) or any other color (http://www.colorpicker.com/)
.j-e-meta-label {
font: italic 12px/1.4 Verdana,sans-serif;
color: #000000;
}
.j-e-meta A {
color: #C02431;
}
I managed to get this to work but please let me know if it works for you.

From:Footer help
Date: 2016-06-29 12:18 am (UTC)First of all, I love your community and your layouts are gorgeous. I'm having a problem with a layout I'm working on and I really hope you can help! I posted this on s2flexisquares, but it looks a little dead over there.
I have a basic account and I'm currently creating a layout and have run into a couple problems. First, the footer. If you go to my lj and scroll to the footer you can see there's a white space below it. I don't want that white space. I can fix it by changing the content background to the same color, but then I get a black space beneath the header. So, my question is, how do I get rid of that white space. Here's (http://refuted.livejournal.com/) a layout I stumbled upon that has a footer similar to the one I want.
The second thing is I would like to have the same transition for my header links like the ones on this tumblr theme (http://nyiurtheme.tumblr.com/). You have to scroll down a bit until the header shows up to see.
The second issue isn't as important as the first. I'd really appreciate your help! Thank you<333
Re: Footer help
Date: 2016-07-13 10:03 pm (UTC)Basic accounts are limited. So you won't be able to do the transitioning for the header because you can't apply the appropriate class or id to the source code. A paid account may be able to accomplish this but I have to tell you, I've never done it so I'm not entirely sure how you go about it.
As for the footer white space. This is your separator which is giving you large space between each post and at the bottom of the last post on the page. If you make this smaller it will diminish the spacing between posts.
What I would do is make a negative top margin to your footer.
margin: -100px auto -20px auto;
This will bring the footer up and get rid of the extra space at the bottom.
Does this help.
Also, thank you for the compliment and I must say this is a gorgeous layout though I have a tough time reading that really light gray. Still I love it and wish it were my layout. If you share your creations let me know and where you are sharing them at so I can follow it... I taught myself everything I know and sometimes other designers know a trick I'd love to learn.
Or you can share them at

I used to have it in some of my saved things, but since LJ took them away, I don't have them anymore. I like the space because I don't like for things to look all "jumbly."

When you scroll through, see where my posts look neater, because I use spaces. You will see that everyone else does not, and everything is all on top of each other. Do you have the coding for this? I have combed all of my stuff and nothing. :/ I also want it at my place. KW is Flex Squares, and my place is Smooth Sailing. Of course! x( LJ really screwed us over. *grrr*
Thank for your consideration! :D
