Suspicious and Spam Comments

I don't hate this feature. I mean I don't love that they always turn everything on when the start it and they need to improve it but I'm so happy to not get the disgusting and annoying spams anymore. Still here is some information on the spam filter.

So I've been noticing in both my own journal and communities that I haven't been able to see some comments even thought it says there are more comments there than are actually showing up. Instead I'm getting a place holder that says (Spam comment) or (Suspicious comment).

Why are these showing up like this you may ask? In their rush to fight spam LJ has created a new filter that're AUTOMATICALLY TURNED ON in ALL journals and communities, which screens comments that are made with 'suspicious links' ie links that are not on their safe whitelist, so pretty much the majority of the internet. There is no noted way to add to the 'whitelist'.

What really gets me is that they didn't inform people that they were doing this until a week after it was done and that it was automatically turned on.

So how do I turn it off you might ask.

That's simple. Go to your Settings, click on the Privacy tab, and half way down where it says Spam Protection uncheck the box next to "Comments containing a link to a non-whitelisted domain will be marked as spam and moved to a special section." This applies to both personal journal and communities and the opinion has to be manually changed in each one.

While I understand how this could be a good idea, I think they went about it in a very backhanded way, and have implemented it poorly. There was no message to anyone that the link has been screened. It's automatically done. This went on for over a week before they said anything about it. There is still nothing in the FAQs about it even. The only way I found out about this way going through the support pages where people were reporting similar issues.

First I would like to say that I LOVE your community and use your layouts on all three of my journals/communities (with proper credit of course and minor edits to the code and graphics if you want see my changes personal (http://meekosan.livejournal.com),comm1 (http://onitboss.livejournal.com),comm2 (http://cosmicallymeeko.livejournal.com)).

But I can't say that I particularly care for this feature. For one, I only ever got a spam post once and it was an anonymous post which I also have set for being screened if its not a registered user. My personal journal is friends only. What I especially hate is that the staff on LJ goes and activates something and forces it onto the user whether they want it or not (hello, facebook much?) even though you can deactivate the feature easily enough.

Thanks. It is always cool to see my layouts at work. And the geek it me is so happy to see one of my Star Trek ones. *lol*

I agree. I'm just glad we have it as an option rather than having to deal with the spam. Facebook could drive me to madness.

Yes! I had a hard time choosing which of the trek layouts to use too LOL. I also had to add the animation into the header so that it was more like LCARS. It's just so fun and funky to me XD

I wish I knew how to make layouts. All I know how to do is tweak already established coding. I enjoy all of you that do these awesome layouts. I only do headers and graphics really. If you ever want a header for any new layouts, don't hesitate to drop me a line :)

I'm only on facebook now for the games. Addicted to CafeWorld LOL.

I loved that animation on it. When I made the layout I never even though about making headers with animation but yours is very cool.

I will. That is great. I will definitely keep you in mind if I need any header help.

The header animation I used with onitboss is something I actually recently learned to do and am still kicking myself because of how easy it was. But it's an effect that is like my new fave thing (see the most recent post for StargateLand on cosmicallymeeko...I use it for the picspam challenge LOL)

She does do great work! I'm so glad that her site is also back up because I caught some there that I missed on her LJ posts. All my STV icons are by her because I just fail at making any Trek icons. I dunno why.

SGA and NCIS no problem, or even stock but all the ones i ever made of Trek were trash.

She really does. I didn't know it was down but I'm glad she's up again. Maybe that mean more ST icons in our future.

I suck at the ST ones too. I don't get it.
